Ghosts of the Ninth: Rome's Lost Legion
The Ninth Legion, or Legio IX Hispana, stands as one of the most enigmatic and storied units of the Roman Empire, its fate shrouded in mystery and intrigue.
Formed in the 1st century BC, this elite legion earned its stripes in the fierce battles of Hispania and played a pivotal role in the Roman conquest of Britain. Stationed in the rugged northern frontier, the Ninth faced relentless tribal uprisings and the harsh realities of frontier warfare. Then, without warning, the legion vanished from historical records around AD 117.
Did they meet their end in a brutal ambush, succumb to the relentless onslaught of rebellious tribes, or were they transferred to the distant, perilous eastern front? Join Keith as he explores this haunting enigma.
